About OneRing Tours

My name is Dawn, I am the owner operator of OneRing Tours in Twizel, New Zealand.

My love with everything Middle Earth started as a young child as I listened to my mother read the Hobbit, then Lord of the Rings to myself and my brother on cold wet rainy days in winter school holidays. I grew a love of C S Lewis and then of JRR Tolkien as I matured into adulthood, and  indeed most fantasy science fiction interests me.

In 1997 myself and my husband moved to Twizel, right about the time Peter Jackson was out there looking for locations for his first epic trilogy. I was living in Twizel whilst they were filming the epic scenes here in this region. Back then my husband and I owned a restaurant so had a few cast and crew eat at our café. A couple of our staff and many of the locals were Orcs for the largest film scene, Battle of Pelennor fields.

I started working for Vernon Reid, the founder of the Lord of the Rings Tour in Twizel, not long after he started the business. Then, in 2012 I had the opportunity to buy the company off him and only a few months later, I had the amazing experience of being an extra on the set of the second trilogy, The Hobbit. Peter Jackson or PJ as he is known on set, chose the shores of Lake Pukaki to be the Laketown location for the third movie “ Battle of the Five Armies” and I got to meet the amazing PJ himself!!!! For me it was not about  being in the movie but about being part of an experience, and that experience has enabled me to bring a reality about movie locations and movie making to our Lord of the Rings and Hobbit tours.

Five years on, I still LOVE  my job and all that it brings to me and ‘Ringers’ alike. My husband Samuel and my children Iain and Georgia share my love so much so that twice a year, every Christmas and Easter, it is our family tradition to watch all six movies. I never tire of it.
