Why is The One Ring so dangerous?

It is a strange fate that we should suffer so much fear and doubt over so small a thing. Such a little thing”
Boromir – Fellowship of the Ring 2001

The One Ring does not immediately spring to mind as a weapon of mass destruction, it is just a ring after all.

This is not a weapon which will destroy Middle-earth like a bomb, the true danger of the One Ring is its ability to corrupt any who possess it, no matter how good their original intentions are, as the ring will over time bend the wearer’s will, to its master’s (Sauron) will.

In a way this could be more destructive as even good people can be corrupted, the ring has a mind of it’ s own and it wants to preserve itself and get back to its master and creator. This corruption may start off very subtly as the ring gains hold over the wearer, they themselves may not be aware of this change until it is too late.

It has the power to even corrupt those around the person who currently possesses the ring, as we see with Boromir trying to take the One Ring from Frodo as he believes it will be for the good of Gondor in The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The One Ring’s power is very strong as it was created with extreme malice and hate and took so much of its creator’s energy that he lost the ability to have a physical body when the ring was separated from him. This is why Sauron needs the ring back as without it, he cannot easily dominate all living creatures on Middle-earth and bend them to his will and make them suffer.

The only way to destroy this evil is to destroy the ring in the fires of Mount Doom where it was created and ending the corruption of The One Ring.
